The place was easy to defend because it is surrounded on all sides by steep slopes. The castle played an important role in the defense system of the Belasitsa battle in 1014, unlike other strongholds, the fortress above Strumica was not conquered by the Byzantine emperor Basil II.
The Castle was surrounded by outer walls, following the edge of the plateau. The western extent of outer wall which is about 40 meters long is well preserved and can be seen today. The main entrance was located on the south side, protected by two towers. The southwest tower is partially preserved, but the southeast was destroyed by an earthquake in the 30s of XX century. The access to the main gate was by a wooden bridge, probably rolling.

Inside the fortress there are well-preserved remains of a multi polygon tower - the command center of the fortress.
